In 2007, Google and Intel started this initiative comprised of a non profit group of eco conscious consumers, conservation organisations and businesses. The Climate Savers Computing Initiative runs along similar lines as the WWF Climate Savers program but differs in the fact that their goals include to promote development, deployment and adoption of technologies that are related to improving the power delivery of computers and also reducing energy consumed during the inactive state of the computer.
Participants in the Climate Savers Computing Initiative are computer and component manufacturers who collectively commit to produce products that meet targets set by the Initiative. By 2010, the carbon dioxide emissions from the operation of computers should be reduced by 54 million tons a year. The Climate Savers Computing Initiative is similar in operating standards to the Energy Star program led by the U.S. government. Some of the members are Intel Corporation, EDS, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Google and World Wildlife Fund.
