One of the largest zoos in the UK in Devon, the Paignton Zoo is owned by the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust. This zoo is committed to scientific research, education, conservation and high standards of animal husbandry and welfare.
Paignton Zoo is one of the few places where the new concept of Vertical Farming has been put to use by Valcent Products Inc and their Royal Horticultural Society special award winning product VertiCrop. The unveiling of this system at the zoo included a display of the product with a cabbage crop.
Vertical farming is the cultivating and growing of large quantities of food in high rise buildings within an urban location. The agricultural yield is aided by artificial lighting, aeroponic and advanced hydroponic techniques. Vertical faming is set to be one of the key systems that will be looked at to feed a rapidly growing population fast depleting the earth’s resources.
