Muda is a Japanese word that refers to waste that is generated by primarily unorganised systems. It is a traditional term for any wasteful activity that does not add value and is unproductive. Muda also forms the key concept in Toyota Production System which identifies three types of waste – Muda, Mura and Muri. The prefix Mu in Japan is widely viewed as referring to a product improvement initiative and as waste reduction is an effective tool towards profitibality, TPS has honed into the importance of the concept of Muda for its functioning.
