Husk Power Systems is a company based in Bihar, India, founded by a team of alumnus from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Husk Power operates mini power plants that generate between 35kw and 100 kw of electricity by converting rice husk into electricity. Consumers are villagers in the rural areas that are off grid. The cost effective technology serves to light up about 10,000 homes and small shops across three villages. The open source model is easy to replicate and the company is hoping to up the number of plants by May this year. Husk Power Systems won an inaugural global business plan competition in 2009 sponsored by Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Cisco Systems. With the input of venture capital, power from this company lighting up more of the ‘rice belt’ is expected.
