Genetically Modified Food Crop

February 16, 2010 · 0 comments

Food crops derived from genetically modified organisms are called Genetically Modified Food Crops or Genetically Modified Foods. Genetic engineering modifies these organisms by introducing changes into their DNA. The process used is either Cisgenesis or Transgenesis. Other processes include mutagenesis, selective breeding and somaclonal variation. GM foods have been available since the 1990s. Invariably the foods tend to be plant products like soybean, cotton seed and canola but animal products have also been experimented with. Food that has been genetically altered has come under severe flack on several counts some of which are safety, ecological issues and economic concerns due to the fact that intellectual property law can be applied to these organisms.
