Environmental Audit

An Environmental Audit is either an internal or an independent examination of a corporation, organisation, service, product, individual or a government’s environmental impact. The audit is intended to quantify performance and position vis a vis the environment and at bare minimum can check on regulation compliance. Some audit protocols include ISO 14000 and 14001. The audit report also defines what is required to be done to ensure sustainability.  According to Mattsson and Olsson there are three types of audits, namely, liability audits dealing with legal obligations; management audits that verify whether objectives are being met by the environmental management strategy and function or activity audit which investigates areas like water use or energy.
