Earth’s Green Lungs

The tropical rain forests are called the Earth’s Green Lungs. The rain forests are found in geographical areas near the equator which receive continuous supply of sunshine and rainfall. Globally they occupy 12% of land surface.

The rain forests and climate have a very strong interdependence. These biodiversity rich zones turn over about 28% of the world’s oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Natural carbon sequestration through biological processes come into play in these conditions too.  The earth’s green lungs help mitigate adverse effects of climate change by serving as pollution filters, absorbing naturally the carbon dioxide in the air which could otherwise be released into the atmosphere and cause global warming.

Preservation of the rain forests is imperative for the preservation of human life.
