Dumpster Diving or Skipping as it is know in the United Kingdom refers to the practice of going through residential or commercial waste in the hope of unearthing discarded items which are useless to the owner but which may have value to the dumpster diver. There are many reasons why people may indulge in this activity and these range from spontaneous curiosity, preferred low impact lifestyle as with Freegans (considered a green endeavour) and sometimes lack of alternative economic activities. Artists, students, garbologists, private detectives seeking official information may also from time to time require to dumpster dive for research or work. There are however concerns about health and safety as well as the legality of taking things that technically belong to someone else.
