When a group get together in a virtual space to collaborate on ideas and problem using technology such as internet conferencing or instant messaging, Distributed Collaborative Intelligence is said to be at work. The group members are able to interact in real time even if they are not physically in the same location. Collaborative Intelligence allows for people to avoid unnecessary travel and therefore helps the environment. Collaborative groupware includes Skype, NetMeeting, WebEx, online chat, Stigmergy and social evolutionary computation to name a few. Factors that aid the success of collaborative intelligence are moderation and facilitation; adherence to rules of member interaction; no limits to creative thinking; strong group feedback; quality control and the construction of a documented group memory or knowledge base.
