Congestion Charging

November 19, 2009 · 0 comments

With the aim of reducing traffic congestion, a system termed Congestion Charging or pricing has been created which surcharges individuals using transportation networks during peak hours. The charge could be a toll levied, higher charges for public transport, utilities and slots at airports and canals. This method of congestion charging makes people aware of the impact on the environment and actually leads to reduced travel time, increased traffic speed, revenue increase for city transport departments and a reduction in emission levels.

Singapore, London, Milan and Stockholm have applied these charging methods that broadly revolve around four systems: cordon off an area with fine for crossing the cordon, charges for being within an area, toll to gain access to the city center and charges for using a particular lane or single facility.

Travelers are more inclined to start using other modes and routes of transport while also trying to avoid peak hour travel.
